Golden Shields

Here’s a feature about a feather that spoke to me.

I once scared a bird. Of course it immediately flew away, but not without leaving a feather behind. The feather was beautiful. It had two colors, black and white. It appeared straight on the edges and curved in a unique style at the tip. As I ran my fingers on it, I could feel a smooth network of fibers. It was so cool.

As I admired the feather, I was reminded of something way more spectacular – the human body. Your body consists of 206 bones, wrapped in 650 muscles and 7 million miles of nerve fiber. Your eyes possess 100 000 000 receptors and your ears, 24 000 fibers. Your heart beats 36 000 000 times every year and sends blood pumping through more than 60 000 miles of veins, arteries and capillaries. A heart cycle is completed in just 0.8 seconds. Even your brain consists of 13 000 000 000 nerve cells. Now describe the human body in one word.

The next time you want to see fascination, begin with yourself. God clothed you with splendor when he wove you in your mother’s womb. In fact, when God looks in a mirror, he sees you – his image (Genesis 1: 27). The bible was spot on when it said we were ‘fearfully and wonderfully made.’ (Psalms 139:14). You simply are spectacular made alive.

If God put so much detail in creating these bodies of ours, are we not to be diligent in our care for them? It is said that our lives are gifts from God, what we do with them are our gifts to God. In the same way, with the right kind of care for these bodies of ours, we tell God we appreciate the bodies he gave us.

No matter your frame, God didn’t make a mistake creating you. You were carefully hand-crafted by the greatest designer of the universe. Cherish and protect your body or else you would have to live with “bronze shields” instead of “gold shields” – nothing like the original (2 Chronicles 12:9,10). How would you feel living on a machine for every moment of your life, knowing very well you could have prevented it?

You were created an original, don’t die a copy. How do you do that? Learn to live well.

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
